Welcome
to Finca Vida Verde
A permaculture
design-inspired farm
An hour west of the capital in the Avocado Mountains of Costa Rica (Los Aguacates).
Originally a dry highland primary forest, the land has seen many incarnations from a simple homestead, to cattle land, then left 10 years fallow covered only with hardy tacotal.
The farm now serves as an example of how land can be transformed and rebuilt in a more regenerative way.

Part of Colectivo Tacotal
An international and intercultural ecovillage founded in 2008 based on the principles of permaculture, non-violence, consensus, ecological stewardship and interconnectedness.
The community is made up of 25 families from the US, Costa Rica, and Mexico with a shared love of music, earth-stewardship and intentional gatherings.
Gravity-fed water system
The land is roughly 60 acres and runs along the majestic Rio Machuca which creates its eastern border and feeds our water system from the nearby Machucita Quebrada.
We believe in heavy mulching, and composting to create healthier soil and trees. We close the cycle of Earth>Food>Human>Earth through the use of our Humanure composting system.

Land of abundance
On our roughly two-acre farm, we grow a diverse variety of fruit trees such as: breadfruit, jakfruit, banana, platano, canastel, macadamia, pitanga, jocote, breadnut, guanabana, mandarin lime, coconut, and chocolate sapote, but we are most proud of our ground propagated pineapples!
On our community commons, you can also graze on: avocado, mango, orange, mandarinas, chica sapote, mamey sapote, miracle fruit, durian, coffee and dozens of other incredible local and endemic plants and trees when in season.
The farm is surrounded by old growth endemic medicinal trees like Guapinol, Mango, and Cocobolo. Capuchin “cara blanca” monkeys, toucans, mot-mot’s and other rare birds and animals are frequent visitors and come to enjoy the fruits of the land.

About Human
Matthew Human is the founder of Finca Vida Verde. He is a musician born in Utica, NY. He studied Anthropology and Event Production at Kent State University.
As a longtime advocate for healthy food and consumer rights, Human would go on to lead three US-based tours in support of GMO labeling initiatives, including 2011’s GMO Right 2 Know March, a 315 mile political march from Brooklyn, NY to Washington, DC.
The consumer health motivated march made its way down the eastern seaboard, briefly joining the ‘Occupy’ camps popping up in the various cities, and culminated in a high-profile concert outside the White House on International Food Day that year.
Matthew Human is recognized as the Global Music Ambassador of Food For Life Global, the world’s largest vegetarian food relief program which serves over 2 million free hot meals daily.
Beyond the music, Matthew Human is also a self-described foodie, a chef, a yogi, and fruit farmer who enjoys spending time on his off-the-grid community farm in Costa Rica where he produces private events and retreats and has developed a permaculture inspired retreat center.
The singer also enjoys acting, building community, supporting organic farmers, and helping other young musicians find a foothold in the constantly changing world of the music business.
